The tax, also known as an E-commerce convenience fee, would impose a flat fee on Pennsylvania buyers for all goods purchased online that come into the state.
The committee is considering this option to try to address the impact the shipping of goods purchased online has on the environment and the transportation industry within the state.
Prescriptions would be exempt from the package tax.
It's estimated 721.5 million parcels were shipped into Pennsylvania in 2020, according to a statement made by Deputy Secretary of Multimodal Jennie Granger at a recent Transportation Revenue Options Commission meeting.
This is an approximate increase of 200 million packages compared to 2019.
